What is Topical Minoxidil and What is it Used For?

Topical Minoxidil is a well-established treatment for male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It works by stimulating hair growth and prolonging the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, helping to thicken hair and reduce shedding.

Minoxidil is commonly used for hair thinning on the scalp and is one of the most widely prescribed topical solutions for hair loss.

How Does Topical Minoxidil Work?

Minoxidil acts as a vasodilator, increasing blood flow to hair follicles and encouraging hair growth. It helps:

  • Stimulate the hair follicles

  • Increase hair density

  • Extend the hair growth cycle

How to Use Topical Minoxidil

  • Apply 1 ml to the scalp twice daily, as instructed by your healthcare provider.

  • Ensure your scalp is dry before application.

  • Avoid washing the scalp for 4 hours after application to allow the solution to be absorbed.

How Effective is Topical Minoxidil?

Results may begin to appear after 3 to 6 months of regular use, with optimal effects typically seen after 12 months.

Possible Side Effects

  • Scalp irritation or redness

  • Dryness and flaking

  • Increased facial hair growth in women

Important Considerations

  • Regular check-ups: Your healthcare provider may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.

  • Missed dose: If you forget to apply a dose, do not double the next one. Simply continue with your regular application schedule.
